Why a 2nd Opinion?

“Ignoring signs or symptoms of a problem is never an option.”
.....Lisa Curcio, M.D.

If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and have received a recommended treatment plan you most likely have many questions and concerns. With so many breast cancer treatment options available, Dr. Lisa Curcio would like to reassure you that it’s normal to be concerned and somewhat confused as to the best options for you. As a breast cancer surgeon who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 37, Dr. Curcio knows firsthand how overwhelming the diagnosis and treatment information can be.

At Advanced Breast Care Specialists we understand the importance of obtaining a second opinion after a breast cancer diagnosis in order to confirm the diagnosis and/or or get more information on the recommended treatment plan. After a breast cancer diagnosis, Dr. Curcio stresses the importance in understanding of all the options available to you and that you feel empowered to make the best decision possible based on your individual needs.

Some helpful terms and definitions courtesy of Myriad Genetics:

Getting a second opinion will not offend your doctor! Many patients feel requesting a second opinion was may be offensive or represent a lack of confidence in their doctors. Dr. Curcio does not believe this to be the case and recommends that patients secure a second opinion.

At Advanced Breast Care Specialists we see many women each year seeking second opinions. When you meet with our Breast Care Team, comprised of Dr. Curcio, our cancer nurse practitioner, and other complementary practitioners we will review the available information you bring with you to your appointment. You may have received the following tests:

  • X rays, or other breast imaging tests such as mammogram, breast ultrasound and MRI
  • Biopsy report, or pathology report
  • Blood tests
  • Special tests on removed cancer tissue--for example, estrogen and progesterone receptor status
  • Surgical report

We want you to be in the driver’s seat of your breast cancer treatment, by being well informed and involved in making decisions regarding your treatment.
