Local Breast Cancer Surgeon and Survivor
Forms Relay for Life Team

Lisa Curcio is a unique Rancho resident. She is a wife and mother like many, but she is also south Orange County’s only female surgical oncologist. A most unusual turn in her life came when she was just 37 years old and discovered breast cancer on her own mammogram. She now devotes her life’s work to the education, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

After working several years as a general and oncologic surgeon at Mission Hospital, Dr. Curcio founded Advanced Breast Care Specialists of Orange County in August of 2005, where she is dedicated to serving patients in all aspects of breast care including breast cancer.

Dr. Curcio offers her own unique perspective after experiencing the disease first hand. While she offers the latest medical treatments in breast care, Dr. Curcio understands the emotional issues involved in issues related to the breast and focuses on treating the woman as a whole. Patients can seek personal consultations, support groups or second opinions through her practice.

Advanced Breast Care Specialists formed a Relay for Life Team for the Rancho Santa Margarita event on August 5 & 6. Dr. Curcio invites her patients, fellow breast cancer survivors, neighbors and friends to join her in the 24-hour event to be held at Las Flores Middle School in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Dr. Curcio is excited to participate in Relay for Life for the first time. She said, “Being a part of Relay for Life is a chance for me to continue to heal from my own cancer and gives me an opportunity to spend time and reflect with fellow survivors and friends.”

Prior to joining Mission Hospital, Dr. Curcio was Chief of Surgical Oncology at Keesler Medical Center in Missouri from 1997 – 2001. She received her B.S. in Biology from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania and an M.D. from George Washington University Medical School in Washington D.C and fellowship training at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California.

She is a cancer liaison at Mission Hospital Medical Center, served as the tumor board chairperson for the last four years and is an active member of the hospital’s cancer committee.

Additionally, she is active with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization and The American Cancer Society.

Dr. Curcio is a dynamic speaker and she has addressed a variety of professional and community groups over her twenty-year career.
